We were exhausted — tired and emotionally raw.

Our little boy was finally stable and home from the hospital. He was in so much pain; I was actually surprised and relieved he’d finally fallen asleep. He was almost 2 years old and had given us quite the scare.

Dear Parent: About THAT kid…

ON 10 NOVEMBER, 2014

Dear Parent:

I know. You’re worried. Every day, your child comes home with a story about THAT kid. The one who is always hitting shoving pinching scratching maybe even biting other children. The one who always has to hold my hand in the hallway. The one who has a special spot at the carpet, and sometimes sits on a chair rather than the floor. The one who had to leave the block centre because blocks are not for throwing……

Churches seen as failing to welcome peop

I don’t believe this is the norm, but I think sometimes we need to think about how we are perceived. Sometime we as special needs parents are overly aware of inclusion (or lack thereof), but many time those who are NOT part of this select community are not aware of how their actions or attitudes are being received. We need to be aware of how we interact with others and how we treat those who live with special needs – whether as one with the challenge, caring for one with a challenge, or even just having to accommodate them in a public place of work, worship, or play; remember, none of them/us choose this life – it was given to us, and how we handle it is what makes us who we are.
